Jan 01, 2025Today, I’m diving into the concept of superpowers—those traits you might have been conditioned to see as weaknesses but are actually your greatest strengths.
Embracing Your Superpower
Recently, I had a conversation with someone who shared that their habit of always thinking ten steps ahead was negatively impacting their ability to stay present. They saw it as a flaw. But I stopped them in their tracks and said, "No, that is your superpower!" The ability to envision the future, plan ahead, and strategize is a rare and powerful gift. Like any superpower, it simply requires understanding, control, and direction.
This reminded me of a quote I heard on the Action Academy Podcast: "Your greatest weakness is your greatest strength overused." When unbalanced, even our most remarkable abilities can become liabilities. The key is to learn to harness and direct them effectively.
The Danger of Comparison and Negative Conditioning
Society often teaches us to conform, to fit in, and to downplay what makes us unique. This conditioning can lead us to see our superpowers as flaws. For example:

Negative Feedback: Someone may have criticized your drive or intensity, calling it "too much." In reality, that passion is what propels you forward.

Comparison Culture: Social media and societal norms push us to measure ourselves against others. But remember, a fish cannot climb a tree, nor can a monkey swim like a fish. Your strengths are uniquely yours.

Cultural Expectations: Some communities prioritize certain talents or careers over others, causing many to undervalue their true calling.
These influences can obscure your self-perception and hold you back from recognizing your strengths.
Turning Weaknesses Into Strengths
Think of your superpower like Spider-Man’s web. If uncontrolled, it creates chaos, but when directed, it becomes a powerful tool. Here’s how you can begin to identify and harness your unique abilities:

Self-Reflection: Take time to meditate or journal about your strengths. Ask yourself:

What am I naturally good at?

What have people complimented me on or criticized me for?

What feels effortless to me but might seem extraordinary to others?

Flip the Script: Reframe negative feedback. For instance:

"You’re too impatient" becomes "You have a strong drive to get things done."

"You’re too emotional" becomes "You’re deeply empathetic and attuned to others."

Surround Yourself with Support: Seek out people who value your gifts. Spend less time with those who make you feel small.

Develop Your Gift: Take steps to hone your superpower. Whether it’s through education, coaching, or practice, refining your skills can help you wield them effectively.
Real-Life Example: My Superpower
For years, I thought my ability to envision possibilities and create businesses was a flaw because I struggled with day-to-day operations. Then I realized: I’m a visionary, not an implementer.
My role is to see the potential in a rundown building, create a vision for a thriving business, and outline the steps to make it happen. But maintaining and managing the day-to-day operations? That’s not my zone of genius. By partnering with implementers who complement my strengths, I’ve been able to turn my ideas into thriving ventures.
How to Discover Your Superpower
If you’re unsure what your superpower is, consider these steps:

Reflect on Childhood Interests: What came naturally to you as a child? What activities brought you joy?

Listen to Feedback: Pay attention to what others have noticed about you, both positive and negative.

Notice What Energizes You: What tasks or activities light you up and make time fly?

Ask for Help: Work with a coach, mentor, or therapist to gain clarity on your unique gifts.
