Overcoming Resistance: How to Push Past Fear and Create Your Legacy
Dec 11, 2024Resistance. It’s a sneaky force that keeps us from doing the things we say we want. But what if I told you that resistance is not the real problem? Let’s explore the root of resistance and discover how to overcome it to achieve your goals and create a meaningful impact.
The Story of Resistance: A Client’s Journey
Today, I want to share a story about a client I’ve been working with. He’s a tough guy—a military veteran, risk-taker, and go-getter who accomplishes nearly everything he sets his mind to. Yet, for the past three months, there’s been one action item he hasn’t tackled: writing the first pages of a book about his life.
When I asked him why this task remained undone, he said he didn’t have time. But we both knew that wasn’t true. He finds time for everything else. After some honest back-and-forth, the truth emerged: he was avoiding the discomfort of revisiting painful memories needed to write the book.
What Resistance Really Is
Resistance isn’t about time or convenience. It’s often rooted in fear, insecurity, or discomfort. For my client, the thought of reliving emotional moments was overwhelming. For others, it might be fear of judgment, rejection, or failure. The key is to identify the root of the resistance.
A Shift in Focus
Here’s a powerful insight from Rory Vaden of the Influential Brand Podcast: If you’re not pursuing your goals because of fear or insecurity, it’s because you’re focused on yourself.
When you shift your focus to the people who need your message or product, your fear diminishes. Think about the person whose life will change because of what you’re creating. Visualize them reading your book, watching your video, or using your product. When you remind yourself of the impact you can have, it becomes easier to push through the discomfort.
Three Steps to Overcoming Resistance
1. Identify the Root Cause
Resistance doesn’t exist without reason. Is it fear of failure, fear of judgment, or discomfort with confronting emotions? Take time to reflect and get honest with yourself.
2. Create a Supportive Environment
Set yourself up for success by crafting an environment that eliminates distractions and fosters focus. Writers go on retreats for a reason: to find uninterrupted time and space to create. If you’re working from home, wake up earlier or carve out quiet time after the kids go to bed. Adjust your environment to align with your goals.
3. Remember Who You’re Doing It For
When fear strikes, remind yourself: it’s not about you. You’re creating something to help others. Focus on that one person whose life will change because you pushed through. Their story can become your motivation.
A Personal Reflection
When I create content—whether it’s a podcast, a blog post, or even an Instagram caption—I think about someone specific. I picture her. I write or speak directly to her. This specificity helps me connect deeply and authentically, and ironically, it resonates with a broader audience.
As I told my client today, “If you try to write for everyone, you’ll write for no one.” The power of your message lies in its clarity and focus.
Final Thoughts
Resistance is a universal experience. It’s not a sign of weakness—it’s a call to growth. By understanding its roots, creating a supportive environment, and focusing on your purpose, you can overcome resistance and make your mark.
So, what’s the thing you’ve been avoiding? What resistance do you need to push through? Start small, take the first step, and remember—it’s not about you. It’s about the impact you’re here to make.
